Dear All

We are still getting the money in from the Sponsored Walk that Jeremy and Margaret Kett undertook on behalf of our Campsite Development Fund (106 miles across the South Downs Way) but expect the total raised to be in the region of £600.  Thank you to everyone who sponsored them - and a special Thank you to Jeremy and Margaret who have just about recovered.

e-mail
Reminder - not all e-mails are reaching me.  If I have not responded within 5 working days I have not received your message.

Nights Away
Any nights away forms for camps / expeditions etc during my holiday period should be with me before I leave.  If, for any reason, this deadline is missed please ensure they are sent to Graham Lincoln the District Nights Away Adviser.

Reminder that all forms must be the most recent one (Graham has previously circulated this and it is available from Scoutbase) and must be completed fully.  The Permit Holder MUST be on site overnight.  Anyone flouting the NA rules (which are there for a purpose - not just because it was felt you didn't have enough paperwork to completed!) will have their permits suspended / removed.

Please note that all new Nights Away Permit Holders (excluding those who have been fast-tracked) will be required to camp locally (within the area of West Sussex) for their first year.

Water / Adventurous Activity Permits
Please ensure these are in date.  Any renewals will need to be done through the new Permit Scheme (details on Scoutbase or with GSL's).

Those groups who have canoes, kayaks, power boats, etc etc please ensure the safety certificates are correct and uptodate.

AGM
Thank you to all of you who attending our District AGM.  For those of you who were unable to attend, I have asked Prue to send all GSL's a copy of our AGM document (it is too large to e-mail) - which includes information on our Campsite Development.  You will receive this on her return from holiday next week.

Duty Group
Thank you once again to 1st Ferring who were Duty Group last year.  4th Littlehampton have now taken over this "prestigious" position and I look forward to working with them over the coming months.

District Chairman
For those of you who have not yet heard, Shirley Cleall has very kindly agreed to become our District Chairman.  Shirley's roots, as I'm sure you all know, are well and truly in this District and I look forward to working with her over the coming year.

District Champion
The role description for this position has been previously circulated so I am not going to send it again.  My fear is that if we cannot fill this role then the District will be seriously compromised when it comes to requesting the time of the County Recruitment & Development Officer.  Please let me know if you there is anyone within the District who you think might be interested.

First Response
As the last First Response course was a great success, we are intending (dependent on the availabilty of the Trainer and his team) to run one again either mid November or early in the New Year.  Please remember that when it comes to Review time, roles cannot be renewed unless minimum First Response is held.  To get a feel of how many might need this course, please let me have some provisional numbers as soon as possible.

Development Meeting - 4 July
Reminder - 8pm at The Body Shop Trading Post.  I have received only two apologies (Tony S and Stuart) so will see the rest of you then (Anne attending for 1st Rustington).  If you already have Group Development Plans please bring them with you so that they can be amalgamated into the District one.

Sir Brian Bartelott Award - Last Call
We already have some entrants from A&L but I just want to double check that there are no more groups out there who are putting a request together.  If there are, please contact Cheryl Stevens (details on our website) before end July.

Appointments Committee
As explained at the District AGM - we are refreshing our Appointments Committee in line with new guidance from HQ.  There is to be a "team" of 12 or so non-warranted adults who have an interest in Scouting in some way or another and who attend the meetings on a rota basis so, the more people we have, the less meetings they have to attend.  So far, the team consists of 4 + our Appts Secretary and our District Chaplin so if you have someone on your Exec or a parent / friend of scouting / someone you work with maybe, who you think will be interested please let me know.  They need to complete a CRB form, and AA form so that we can properly track their length of service and be prepared to undertake a training module written specifically for Appointment Committee members.

Group AGM's
There are still two Groups who have not yet set dates for their AGM.  Please remember that these must take place no later than the end of September.  I look forward to receiving dates in due course.

Chief Scout Commendations for Good Service
I am delighted to announce that the following Scouters have recently received the Chief Scout's Commendation for Good Service:
  • Ian Gaskell - GSL 1st Angmering
  • Cheryl Stevens - CSL 1st East Preston
  • Lindsay Burns - District Leader (soon to become Local Training Manager)
Congratulations to them all.
