The Viewpoint Newsletter provides information to all the Adults involved in Scouting in the Arundel and Littlehampton District.

September 2002

  • New District Commissioner - Simon Burgess has been appointed the new District Commissioner for Arundel & Littlehampton. Simon who takes up the his new post on 1st September 2002, until recently was the Deputy District Commissioner for Worthing District and has been involved in Scouting all his life, starting as a Cub Scout and working through the sections until Venture Scouts, when he was awarded the Queen's Scout Award. Simon's Adult roles over the last 14 years have included being an Assistant Cub Scout Leader, Assistant Scout Leader and County Scout Leader. Simon has lived in Littlehampton for the last 11 years and is married to Dawn. He currently works for Southern Water in Brighton in the company's Environment Team. If there are any opportunities in the near future for the New DC to visit a Group or section please let him know as he is keen to meet as many people in the District as possible.   • Meet the New District Commissioner - A special reception is being held on Friday 27th September. On this evening, you will have a chance to meet the new District Commissioner and the rest of the District Team. A chance for you to share your views and ideas with the team that will be 


  • New County Diary - A new County Diary has been produced listing the events and meetings to be held in West Sussex, details will appear in the District Diary or you can get information from your GSL or the District Commissioner.


  • St.George's Day Parade 2003 - Please put 27th April in your Diaries as this will be the date of next years St.George's Day Parade. More details will follow later.


  • County Day & County AGM 15th September 2002 - Please try and support this event if you can as it will be a showcase for Scouting in West Sussex with many activity based displays which will give you ideas for better programming. Please also if you are going to attend try to bring a friend who is not currently involved in Scouting, to show them what it is all about. Details are available from your GSL of the District Commissioner.


  • County Census September 2002 - In order to better understand the way West Sussex is progressing with its development and its retention of young people in Groups, the County are again asking that ALL sections provide a breakdown of their members and Leaders. Please could GSL's collate their figures and provide them to the District Commissioner by 23rd September 2002. Many thanks.


  • WS2004 - Information regarding the 2004 WS international camp will be distributed during September. The camp will run 31st July to 7th August 2004 and will be even better than before. Put the date in your Troops/Units Diaries. This will provide your young people an opportunity they will never forget so take advantage of the chance to have someone else plan your summer camp for 2004.   • National Talking Points - Each Group Scout Leader and members of the District Team should receive a paper copy of Talking Points from National HQ, if you do not get a copy (it is available as well by email from HQ, see www.scoutbase.org.uk) please ask your GSL to see a copy.


  • Scouting Magazine - Every Adult in Scouting should read this useful resource; it is packed monthly with helpful hints on all aspects of Scouting from Programming to Fundraising. Available from Outdoors in Worthing or by mail order (contact Information Centre) 0845 300 1818. It is also available in a newsagent in Wick.


  • District Team Meeting - A meeting will be held on October 2nd, 8.00 at 7th Littlehampton HQ for all members of the Arundel & Littlehampton District Team, which includes GSL's, ADC's, Chair Scout Fellowship and District Leaders. It is hoped this meeting will look at identifying issues that the team feel need addressing within the District. Please feed your thoughts to your representative on the District Team or directly to the District Commissioner.

  • New District Web Site - www.al-scouts.org.uk .In order for the District Team to better support everyone in the District a website has been developed that will provide information on key events and news that will be helpful to adults in Scouting in the A & L District. It is also hoped that content can be developed in the near future for the young people as well. Any suggestions or contributions please let the District Commissioner know. If you do not have Internet access don't worry we will continue to send information via other improved methods.
